You can use the flag number cards for your classroom calendar, math lesson plans, small group math activities, and even as part of your math centers. They might be a simple printable, but there are so many ways to incorporate them into your teaching!
I love how easy it is to differentiate math instruction using the flag calendar numbers, too. You’re able to meet each of your students’ individual needs with the same math materials.

On top of that, I think the numbered flags work with multiple themes and holidays. You can add them to your July 4th lesson plans, a unit on the United States, Flag Day festivities, or even as part of an around the world theme.

American Flag Calendar Numbers
Below, I share some tips for getting the flag numbers ready to go for your students. I also include a few different ways to use the numbers in your classroom.
Please keep in mind that you don’t have to do everything the same way I do! You and your students will likely come up with even more activities for the numbered flags.
How to Prep the Flag Number Cards
And that’s it! Once you have those ready to go, grab any supplies you want to use in conjunction with the numbered flag cards. Here are some possibilities:
- Counting bears
- Glass gems
- Unifix cubes
- Red, white, and blue manipulatives
- Mini erasers
- Red, white, and blue sensory materials
- White boards or chalkboards

After you have all of the materials gathered, it’s time to prep the American flag calendar numbers! Print the number cards, making as many copies as you’d like. Then cut them apart and laminate each of the cards. Now you’re ready to call the children over.
How to Use the American Flag Calendar Numbers
The first way to use these numbers is right there in the title! Add them to your traditional or linear classroom calendar.
The numbers are 3-inch squares, so be sure to adjust your printer settings if you need a different size. I love that they can be used with various types of calendars – paper, pocket chart, etc.

I know not every teacher likes to use calendar time with their students, and that’s okay. You can just place the American flag numbers into your calendar as reference or decoration.
If you do incorporate some calendar time with your kids, keep it short, simple, and fun! Let the kids point with fun pointers as they count the numbers. Encourage the children to clap and snap as they count to keep their bodies moving a little bit.
Make a silly game out of hiding the upcoming numbers so the kids can make a big reveal of the next number on the calendar. You know your students best, so adjust this time to their ages and needs.
More Ideas for the Flag Printable Numbers
Of course the American flag calendar numbers aren’t just for calendars. You can add them to so many different math lessons, small groups, and centers! Here are some additional ideas to try with the kids:
- Challenge the children to place the cards in numerical order from 0 to 35. As an added challenge, see if they can do so in reverse numerical order.
- Pair the flag numbers with another set, perhaps our summer calendar numbers, and let the children practice patterning.
- Print two copies of the American flag calendar numbers and play a matching game, like Memory.
- Place red, white, and blue manipulatives near the numbered flags. Have the kids practice one-to-one correspondence by placing the appropriate number of manipulatives next to each card.
- Let the kids practice number formation on white boards, chalkboards, or in sensory writing trays. They can use the American flag numbers as reference.
- Use the number cards as you’re introducing addition and subtraction to your students, along with manipulatives of course!
I’m going to stop here. There are definitely MANY more ways to use the American flag calendar numbers, but I feel like these ideas are a good starting point for you.
