Coconuts are a great tool to use in a variety of preschool summer activities. You can use them in so many different ways. They me think of tropical beaches and lazy summer days. As spring is coming to a close, here are some coconutty summer activities for preschoolers!

Coconut-Themed Preschool Summer Activities
Make some taste-safe coconut cloud dough with the kids! It’s perfect for older kiddos, preschoolers, AND little ones who are still mouthing things. It provided hours and hours of playing at my place last summer.
Let children explore coconut eruptions – a super fun science and sensory experience. The “secret ingredient” made the “explosions” super foamy and coconut-scented. We did this experiment over and over (and over!). The only reason we stopped was because we ran out of vinegar. It was a hit at home with my son and his buds, with children I babysat, AND at a preschool summer camp I taught last year.
Bowl with coconuts! As some of my preschoolers pointed out, coconuts look like bowling balls anyway! 🙂 It’s a fun summer game the kids can play together. Plus, it’s even sillier when using a coconut.
Grab some paint and use coconuts for a giant version of “marble” painting! Oh my word – this activity was absolutely hysterical to watch. Based on the smiles and laughs, the kids thought it was awesome.
Have the children help make, and play with, coconut water beads. This was an amazing sensory bin we created last summer, and we all loved it. It smelled wonderful, and the kids spent so much time pouring, counting, and running their fingers through the water beads.
Create a 5 senses activity using a simple coconut! My preschool summer campers had a little too much fun exploring the coconut using their five senses. I loved listening to their observations and opinions throughout the experience!
Even More Coconut Themed Ideas
Of course, I also have to suggest reading books about coconuts! There are some interesting, and silly, books that kiddos will enjoy . . . all about coconuts! A preschool favorite is definitely Chicka Chicka Boom Boom – check out 10 more activities just focused on that book, alone.
If you’re a regular reader, you already know I like to dye sensory materials (like corn) bright colors! So I couldn’t put together this list without including And Next Comes L’s rainbow coconut sensory bin!
Twodaloo shares a simple way to make your own coconut shell instruments! My son saw these the other day (he likes to check out my Pinterest account for “lots of those fun ideas, Mama”) and has already put in a request to make them this summer.
Don’t forget the play dough! The Imagination Tree has an amazing coconut play dough recipe to try! It smells divine, and it feels oh so soft in your hands.
Summer Science Materials
I often find that science is one of the students’ favorite subjects to study in preschool. And I think it’s really important to foster that interest by giving the students plenty of opportunities to study and explore various science concepts.
And as such, it will be helpful to keep some science-related product on-hand in your classroom this summer. Check out this list for some science product suggestions (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
- Bubbles
- Kinetic sand
- Ice cube trays
- Popsicle molds
- Measuring cups
- Plastic bottles (purchased or recycled)
- Plastic bins
- Liquid watercolors
- Food coloring
This list is, in no way, all-inclusive. There are a ton of every day items that can be used for preschool science. Look around your classroom or home to get some ideas. Regardless of which materials you choose, I know your students will have a blast getting to experience the hands-on fun that comes with science!
