I See Fall Printable Book
Read below for some prepping tips, as well as ideas for using the book with your students. As I mentioned above, the free printable actually comes with two fall printable books!

One version has all of the text written out. The other leaves space for the children to practice writing the high frequency word see.
How to Prep the Fall Emergent Reader
First things, first – grab the supplies you’ll need for the fall book. Here’s what I used (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
- Printer
- Paper
- Stapler
And that’s all you need to get the I See Fall printable book ready to go. While you’re grabbing materials, pick up anything you’ll use when the kids are using the reader. Some ideas:
- Crayons
- Markers
- Colored pencils
- Play dough
- Eyeball finger puppets (for wearing when reading)
Once you have everything you need, it’s time to get the book assembled. I like to make my printable books so that all you have to do is print, fold, and staple. And that’s pretty much what you do:
- Get the free fall book at the bottom of this post.
- Save it to your computer.
- Then open the file in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader.
- Print a master version and make as many copies as you need.
- Fold the pages of the book in half, with the print and text facing out.
- Next, arrange the pages in order, keeping the folded sides on the right.
- Finally, staple down the left side.
Here’s a short video that shows what to do:
Of course, you can also cut the pages in half if that’s your preference. No matter how you do it, now the printable reader is ready to use with your students!
How to Use the I See Fall Printable Book with Kids
Once you have the books ready to go, call over a small group of children. You can also do this one-on-one if you’d like. Explain that they’ll be making a book about some of the things we see a lot in the fall!
Walk the children through each page of the book. Point to the words and read them aloud to the kids, encouraging them to help as appropriate. Make note of the high frequency words I and see. Help the kids determine what letters and sounds the fall words start with, too.

If using the version with all the text already typed out, have the children focus on being illustrators. They can color in the images on the book’s pages. Each page contains fall-themed items:
- Leaves
- Apples
- Pumpkins
- Sunflowers
- Acorns
- Scarecrows
The last page reads, “I see fall!” and has no illustration. The children can draw a picture of their favorite fall item, or something that makes them think of fall. You and the children can come up with something specific for this page as you see fit.
If you’re using the version that has a blank line on each page, the kids can help be authors too! Have the children write the word see on each line. You can have a word card available as reference, or you can write the word using a yellow marker for the kids to trace over. That depends on what works best for your students.
Once the books are completed, keep them in your literacy center. This way, you can reread them with the kids, and the children can reread them independently!

Other Ways to Use the Fall Mini Book
Even though I tend to use the I See Fall printable book as a book, there are other ways you can tweak the printable. Here are a few more ideas to consider:
- Cut each page apart and laminate it. Let the kids use dry or wet erase markers to color in the illustrations and write the word see on each page.
- Use the book as small, fall-themed play dough mats. Laminate the pages and let the kids use play dough over each of the illustrations.
- Turn the book into fall color sorting mats. Print the pages and color each illustration a different color (for example . . . apples – red, sunflowers – yellow, pumpkins – orange, acorns – brown, scarecrows – blue , leaves – green). Then place the mats in your math center with manipulatives of various colors. Challenge the kids to sort the manipulatives onto the appropriate mats.
- Make the book into a pocket chart activity. Write the words on sentence strips and place them in a pocket chart. Cut out the pictures and color them in. Laminate the pictures and add them to the pocket chart. The children can match the pictures to the appropriate sentences. You can even write word cards to match to each word in each sentence, too!
