How Do You Teach Science to Preschoolers During Christmas?

Just like the rest of the year, preschoolers are natural scientists. They’re observing, collecting data on those observations, and asking a ton of questions! They might even start some of their own science experiments out on the playground.

There’s a lot going on around them during Christmas, both out in nature and inside their classrooms and homes. So focus on incorporating hands-on Christmas science activities for preschoolers to get the most out of their learning.

And follow their lead when you can. Are your students incredibly interested in evergreen trees? Do they want to explore all things candy canes? You can adjust your lesson plans to include scientific exploration of both those concepts very easily.

Don’t forget to incorporate some Christmas sensory activities, too. Learning about their senses helps hone those scientific observational skills in young children.

Materials for Christmas Science Experiments

Before we jump into all the fun, let’s talk supplies. I highly recommend you take a look through all the Christmas science activities for preschoolers below first. Then take a look at the supplies you already have on-hand. Choose your activities based on that first.

Of course, if you’re looking for a reason to head to the craft store, I’m more than happy to provide that for you! Here are some of the materials used in the Christmas science experiments (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

  • Jingle bells
  • Pinecones
  • Baking soda
  • Candy canes
  • Food coloring or liquid watercolors
  • Borax
  • Evergreen pieces
  • Magnets
  • Vinegar
  • Cornstarch

If you grab some of the above items, you’ll be off to a great start when planning your science lessons for December. If you’re looking for even more science materials, be sure to check out my science tools collection.
